Most socially related undertakings are based on statistical surveys which involve the collection of large volume of data lacking in meaning until statistically summarized. The course will help social data analyst to achieve a highly defined accuracy in thinking, planning and execution of plans.
Target Participants: This course is primarily meant to train working professionals in government and nongovernmental establishments involved in the collection and analysis of socially related data.
Objectives of the Course
- Demonstrate the contents of statistical applications in social system.
- Explain the various dimensions of Statistics in the social system
- Identify the ways in which statistical methods may be useful in the handling of social issues.
- Explain how social problems may be investigated and presented using simple statistical methods.
- Apply modern computer softwares especially the Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) to analyze collected social data.
Course Content/Outline (3 credit units per topic-1hr lecture and 2hrs practical)
The following topics will be covered in this course:
- Wk 1: Meaning of Statistics and its relevance in research.
- Wk 2: Sources and types of Data. Data Collection and levels of Measurement.
- Wk: 3 Measures of Central tendency and deviation. Probability-Addition and Multiplication rules. Conditional Probability.
- Wk 4: Some theoretical distributions – normal, binomial and Poisson. Skewness and Kurtosis. Sampling methods. Parameters and statistics. Statistical estimation theory. Statistical decision theory.
- Wk 5: The Chi and the Student t-tests. Analysis of Variance - One-Way classification. Correlation analysis–Spearman ranked and Pearson’s product moment. Regression analysis – Simple linear.
- Wk 6: Index Numbers and their construction – Price relatives, Quantity relatives and Value relatives. Weighting and Unweighting Index Numbers. Rates: Birth rate, Mortality rate etc. Ratios.
- Wk 7 and Wk 8: Workshop on Statistical computation using SPSS.
Expected Outcomes
On completion of the course, participants should be able to:
- Identify the two groups of statistical methods available.
- Engage in the scientific collection of relevant social data.
- Acquire the methods for the proper presentation of socially related data.
- Possess the ability to select the right statistical technique for analyzing social data for the benefit of society.
- Possess the ability to analyse statistical data, draw conclusion and take scientific decisions on the basis of such conclusions.
